With option decisions needing to be made today around Major League Baseball, the Tigers made a couple of moves ahead of that deadline, including one involving a former No. 1 overall pick of theirs.
According to the team, they have declined the option for starter Casey Mize, however, the 27-year-old will remain with the team.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft remains under team control for the 2025 and 2026 seasons as a player eligible for salary arbitration. The 27-year-old projects to earn $2 million in 2025, according to MLB Trade Rumors, which is why the Tigers declined the $3.1 club option. Mize isn’t scheduled to become a free agent until after the 2026 season.
Additionally, the team also made a series of other moves including reinstating infielder Javier Báez off the 60-day IL.
Lastly, the Tigers also traded RHP Devin Sweet to the Phillies for cash considerations.
Sweet never made an appearance for the big league club after the Tigers claimed him off waivers back in January. He was eventually DFA’d by Detroit and outrighted to Toledo.
