The Tigers and San Francisco Giants came to terms on a trade that sent catcher Cameron Rupp to Detroit for cash considerations according to Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press.
For the Tigers, the addition of Rupp is nothing more than a depth move considering the team is more than likely going to move forward with Grayson Greiner and John Hicks once the team heads north for the regular season. In any sense though the addition of Rupp could signal the Tigers looking for other options within the system other than Hector Sanchez and Bobby Wilson.
For the Giants, it would seem Rupp had already lost out on the battle between Rene Rivera, Stephen Vogt, Aramis Garcia and himself to play a back-up role to Buster Posey in 2019.
Rupp, originally signed with the Giants this past December after being released by the Phillies towards the end of 2018. MLB Trade Rumors notes Rupp as being a ‘nice source of power for a backstop’ and his ‘over a thousand MLB plate appearances under his belt’ but won’t wow anyone with his defensive capabilities behind the plate. My words not theirs.
