The Red Wings and head coach Jeff Blashill have agreed to a contract extension with the terms and the length not being announced.
You kinda had the feeling this was coming considering the silence from Steve Yzerman regarding the question. If Blashill was going to be gone an announcement likely would’ve come within a day or two after the end of the season.
This past season, the Red Wings completed their fifth straight season of missing out on the playoffs while going 19-27-10 and posting a .429 points percentage. That was actually a big improvement on the 17-49-5 record they compiled in 2019-20 that yielded a .275 points percentage.
The team also announced that assistant coach Dan Bylsma who was in charge of a horrid power play this past year will not return next season while assistants Doug Houda, who works with the defense, and goaltending coach Jeff Salajko will likely be back in 2021-22.
Anyways, this is a prime opportunity for Red Wings fans to completely overreact to a piece of news that really isn’t that big of a deal. I’ll go ahead and be completely lazy too in my analysis with this and say that if Blashill survived both a Ken Holland regime as well as Steve Yzerman one thus far then he has to be doing something right. I guess you can look to the improvements this season from last considering the injuries that had to be dealt with towards the end of the year and the fact that we’re in for a long rebuild. All of which could’ve certainly weighed in on Yzerman’s decision to ultimately keep Blashill around.
Or he could simply be the best option available right now. We still don’t know how long Blashill was extended for and before anyone brings up Gerard Gallant something is going on there that brings up a lot questions.
Why doesn’t he have a job now, I mean at all after he was axed so quickly in Vegas?
