According to various sources, including TSN.ca, True North Sports is expected to announce that the Winnipeg NHL franchise will be called the Jets.
It’s anticipated that the announcement will come prior to the NHL Draft tonight from St. Paul Minnesota when Winnipeg drafts 7th overall.
The last NHL franchise in Winnipeg were also called the Jets prior to their move to Phoenix after the 1995-96 season.
The Edmonton Oilers have the first overall pick in this years draft. The general consensus is that the Oilers will select Red Deer Rebels center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The highly-skilled centre had 31 goals and 106 points with Red Deer last season.
Edmonton also has another first round pick at 19.
