In a move that’s going to free up roughly $10 million in cap space, the Lions have opted to release veteran defensive tackle Michael Brockers, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Two years after acquiring Michael Brockers in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams, the Detroit Lions are releasing the veteran defensive lineman in a cost-cutting move that creates $10 million in cap space.
The Lions and Brockers amicably agreed to part ways Thursday, 20 days before the start of the 2023 league year.

The move to cut Brockers wasn’t surprising considering the 32-year-old veteran became less of a fixture on the defensive line as the season rolled on. He appeared in just one game after the Week 6 bye and managed four tackles in six games while the Lions opted for the youth movement as 2022 progressed. Despite his diminished role in 2022, Brockers continued to be a leader on the team. Still, Brockers admitted that his increased lack of playing time was “rough” and is leaving him questioning whether he’ll continue playing football in 2023.
“I know I can still play,” Brockers told the Free Press. “I know I can still play in this league physically. Mentally, it’s a thing that I’m kind of thinking about, but other than that, not really. I’m just finishing this year out strong and get into the offseason and see what happens after that.”
