College football finally cut ties with the BCS Tuesday announcing that they would move to a four team playoff starting in the 2014 season. Teams however will still be selected by a selection committee with the semi finals being rotated between among six different bowl games. The title game will go to the highest bidder while a television deal will be set in place for the next 12 years.
Now a couple of things to consider here is first although a step in the right direction it doesn’t fully take away from the problems the BCS had when determining a National Championship game. Instead of determining the one and two seed you will have controversy surrounding the fourth and fifth seeds. Not to mention from a football standpoint it would have made far more sense having the winners of the current BCS conferences make up the playoff field.
Second you can probably bet that the selection committee will give zero insight as to their choices for the top four teams making the postseason. Here’s where the four team playoff makes more sense for the selection committee. It’s a lot easier to control who makes it to the National Championship game out of four teams rather than six or eight.
Finally, in a way the BCS is still present just given a revamp. You still have the same bowl games with the addition of extra one going to probably the same teams out of the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12 and/or Big East.
Again the four team playoff is a step in the right direction but a pretty half-assed effort.
