The Astros clinch the AL West for the fourth straight season

With all the talk about the Tigers and their historic run, the Astros just completed a pretty impressive run to the postseason of their own.

Tuesday night, the Astros clinched their fourth straight AL West crown by defeating the Seattle Mariners 4-3 securing their spot as the No. 3 team in the American League. However, pretty much dominating the AL West seven of the last eight seasons, this year was a bit of a struggle for Houston. Out of the gate, the Astros lost 24 of their first 36 games while finding themselves 10 games behind the Mariners in mid-June with a 33-40 record. In fact, they are the fourth team to fall behind like that and still make the postseason and the first to do it since 1989 according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com. Moreover, according to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, the Astros have become the first team in the expansion era to start a 162-game season 7-19 and still somehow make the playoffs.
