Sweet Sixteen! The Red Wings win 16th consecutive home game

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011 was the last time the Wings suffered a home loss (4-1) which came courtesy of the Calgary Flames.

That game back in early November also marked the final loss the Wings would endure after a horrible final stretch of October in which the they lost a total of seven straight games.

Fast forward two and a half months later and the Wings still haven’t lost another home game after Saturday night’s 3-2 shootout victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In what has become a common theme for the Wings the past few games, Detroit needed a shootout to finish off their opponent and just like those previous shootouts this season the Wings came out on top.

This time though, Valtteri Filppula got the game winner in the fourth round after he top shelved a backhander on Curtis Sanford who stopped the previous Detroit shooters (Datsyuk, Hudler and Bertuzzi). On the Blue Jackets’ final shot, Jimmy Howard was able to make the save and seal the victory for the Wings.

Niklas Kronwall and Nicklas Lidstrom got the Wings’ regulation goals while Ryan Russell and Nikita Nikitin scored for Columbus.

Jimmy Howard made 17 saves for this league leading 29th win.

Saturday night’s 16th consecutive home victory for the Wings tied them with the 1975-76 Boston Bruins for the fourth-longest home winning streak in NHL history.
