Sporting News: Lions among final four teams in contention for Asomugha

The Nnamdi Asomugha rumors surrounding the Lions keep on rolling in.

According to Vinnie Iyer of the SportingNews, the Lions are among four teams of potential suitors for free agent corner back Nnamdi Asomugha. The other teams Iyer names is the Houston Texans, Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles.

Out of those four teams the Lions seem to be the longest shot according to Iyer who cites the budgetary reasons.

“As Sporting News’ top unrestricted free agent, it will require a deal worth $18-$20 million annually to land Asomugha’s services when the NFL signing period goes in effect soon after the lockout ends,” Iyer writes. “A team source told the Detroit Free Press that’s not a salary range the Lions can afford.”

The Free Press article that Iyer reverts back to is an article written by Dave Birkett who also says the Lions need to consider their other roster needs and the fact that Ndamukong Suh, Matthew Stafford and Jahvid Best should be in line for bonus in the coming seasons. Not to mention they’ll have to look at re-signing Calvin Johnson at some point too.
