Sloppy first half Spartans win season opener

It’s wasn’t pretty in the first half but the Spartans turned it on in the second on their way to a 28-6 victory over Youngstown State from Spartan Stadium.

The sellout crowd of 75,910 saw a very close game to start as the Penguins trailed 7-6 midway through the second quarter. The Spartans were able to extend that lead to 14-6 late in the third quarter as Youngstown State had trouble finishing what looked to be promising drives.

MSU QB Kirk Cousins was 18 of 22 for 222 yards and a touchdown while Spartan wide-out B.J. Cunningham caught night passes for 129 yards. He tied the MSU all-time record for receptions. On the ground Edwin Baker had 15 carries for 91 yards with Le’Veon Bell tallying one touchdown and Caper getting himself one.

In his debut as the starting middle linebacker, Max Bullough had 15 tackles.
