The Detroit Red Wings finally named a general manager, but only on an interim basis.
Detroit named Shawn Horcoff interim general manager Tuesday, placing him in charge of hockey operations as training camp approaches.
The distinction matters. Horcoff has not received the permanent position, and Detroit has not ended its search for a full-time leader.
Horcoff Receives Full Authority for Now
Horcoff will oversee the Red Wings’ day-to-day roster decisions, salary-cap management and hockey operations personnel. He will report directly to team governor and CEO Chris Ilitch.
Detroit also said Horcoff will operate with full decision-making authority during the interim period.
The expanded authority gives Detroit a clear decision-maker heading into camp. Horcoff had already handled many daily responsibilities during the organization’s general manager search, but the interim title now formally establishes his role.
Detroit’s Permanent Search Remains Open
The Red Wings have not promoted Horcoff to the full-time job.
Ilitch said the organization will continue evaluating candidates for its permanent head of hockey operations position. Horcoff remains part of the process, but Detroit is still considering other executives.
Several candidates, including Horcoff, remain under consideration. The organization has not announced a deadline for completing the search.
The interim appointment allows Horcoff to run the department without forcing Detroit to complete a permanent hire before the season.
Horcoff Has Worked His Way Through Detroit’s Front Office
Horcoff joined the Red Wings’ front office in 2016 as director of player development following a 15-season NHL playing career.
He spent several years overseeing and evaluating Detroit prospects before receiving a promotion in February 2022. Horcoff has since served as the Red Wings’ assistant general manager and general manager of the Grand Rapids Griffins.
His front-office experience includes six seasons in player development and direct involvement with Detroit’s prospects, contracts and organizational planning.
The 2026-27 season was scheduled to become Horcoff’s fifth full season running the Griffins. His new interim position places him at the top of Detroit’s NHL operation while the search continues.
Horcoff also brings Michigan ties to the job. The former Michigan State standout recorded 152 points during his college career before playing 1,008 NHL games.
Steve Yzerman Officially Moves Into Advisor Role
Detroit’s leadership change began July 15 when Steve Yzerman moved out of the general manager position.
Yzerman will now officially serve as senior advisor to Ilitch. His seven-year run as Detroit’s general manager ended after the Red Wings missed the playoffs for a 10th consecutive season.
The organization initially kept Yzerman involved with daily operations during the transition. Horcoff’s interim appointment completes the immediate transfer of authority while preserving Yzerman’s advisory role.
Horcoff Inherits Several Immediate Questions
Horcoff takes over days before the Red Wings report for training camp.
The club opens camp Thursday with major questions surrounding its roster and leadership structure. Dylan Larkin will report to camp but will not return as captain.
Detroit plans to begin the season without a captain. Larkin’s future also remains unresolved following his offseason trade request.
Horcoff will now lead the hockey operations department through those conversations. He will also oversee any roster adjustments, contract decisions and salary-cap moves needed before opening night.
An Interim Appointment, Not a Permanent Promotion
Detroit’s announcement provides stability entering training camp, but the organization has not completed its leadership search.
Horcoff holds the general manager title on an interim basis. He has full authority for the current period, yet Ilitch still plans to evaluate other permanent candidates.
The coming weeks will give Detroit a direct look at Horcoff’s ability to manage the NHL roster under pressure. His performance might strengthen his case for the permanent position, but the job remains open.
