Although Takuma Sato ended up winning the Indy 500, Scott Dixon may end up being the luckiest driver to leave Indianapolis tonight.
The crash happened on turn two during lap 53 when Dixon – the poll sitter in the race – ran into Jay Howard‘s car who seconds before got up into the rubber marbles and hit the wall. The ensuing impact with Howard sent Dixon’s car airborne and into the infield retaining wall. The crash tore apart the protective fence and left Dixon’s care in pieces.
Hope Scott Dixon is alright after that crash pic.twitter.com/AphUmeKHa3

Amazingly both Howard and Dixon walked away from the crash with Dixon suffering a sprained ankle. There was also a photographer on the infield grass near the fencing who was led away on a stretcher after ducking away from the wreck at what looked to be the last possible second. Luckily (and thankfully) for him as well he appeared to be okay.
