Northern Ireland’s boy wonder Rory McIlroy shot a final round 69 to win this weekend’s U.S. Open. It certainly was McIlroy’s tournament to lose and he never let up shooting a total 16 under which is the best score in U.S. Open history. This came just short of the all-time major record or -19 set by Tiger Woods at St. Andrews in 2000.
McIlroy now owns scoring records for 36, 54 and 72 holes at the toughest test in golf. He also become only the third player to break 70 in all four rounds of the U.S. Open.
McIlory also did this at the age of 22, the same age that the legendary Jack Nicklaus was when he won the first of his record 18 majors. The two have also become friends and Nicklaus is one to believe that McIlroy has a very promising career ahead of him.
“I think this kid’s going to have a great career,” Nicklaus said in an interview on NBC. “I don’t think there’s any question about it. He’s got all the components.”
With it being fathers day, it was only fitting for McIlroy’s dad Gerry to meet him on the green when he sunk his final shot.
