UFC women’s bantam weight champion Ronda Rousey announced Friday Morning on Good Morning America that her next title defense will come on January 2nd, 2016 at UFC 195. Only it won’t be against Miesha Tate to which many expected but someone of whom Rousey already beat twice. Rousey’s next bout though will come against Holly Holm who like Rousey currently sits undefeated in MMA at 9-0.
Additionally like Rousey’s previous fight against Bethe Correia that last all of 34 seconds, Holm is puncher who has a boxing record of 33-2-3 with two bouts in UFC under her belt that both resulted in decision victories.
Obviously Rousey will still draw, but this fight is nothing more but a formality. Rousey has shown time and time again that she can contend with pretty much any kind of fighting style whether it’s a submission artist like herself or a pure puncher like Correia.
In terms of time in the octagon, Holm has spent almost twice as much time in the octagon in her two UFC bouts (30 minutes) as Rousey has during her entire career (15:36).
Perhaps Holm can wear down Rousey like Brock Lesnar did to Shane Carwin in his first title victory?
I wouldn’t put money on it. In any case though hopefully this is a stepping stone to Rousey vs. Cyborg in the not so distant future.
