Richard Sherman may not be going to the Seahawks, but he’ll be getting his fair share of Seattle for the next three seasons.
According to ESPN, the 29-year-old Sherman signed a three-year, incentive-laden deal with the 49ers that could reach in upwards of $35.15 million.
“I’m thankful to John [Lynch, 49ers GM] and Kyle [Shanahan, 49ers coach] for believing in me,” Sherman told Anderson. “Some smaller details still getting ironed out, but #ShermInTheBay.”
The deal comes after Sherman met with the 49ers during the day on Saturday after San Francisco looked to evaluate the health of the four-time Pro Bowler. Heading into the 2018 season Sherman is looking to recover from a torn Achilles suffered in October of last season as well as some bone spurs on the opposite leg. Obviously the 49ers were satisfied with Sherman’s progress and struck a deal with the most accomplished free agent corner on the market.
Despite wanting to go to a contender, Sherman landing in the Bay Area has it’s benefits for both sides. Although Sherman heading to San Francisco is salt on an open wound for Seahawks fans, the former All-Pro will play a Seattle team he’s very familiar with twice a season for the next three seasons. And speaking of familiarity, Sherman should have little trouble adjusting the defensive scheme in San Francisco considering Niners defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is a former defensive assistant in Seattle.
As far as the 49ers go, they fill a huge void in their secondary heading into next season with a guy who feels he has plenty more to prove, especially after getting released just a few days ago.
