According to Greg Doyle of CBS Sports, Virginia Commonwealth head basketball coach Shaka Smart will not cash in on his spectacular run with the VCU Rams during the NCAA Tournament and remain with the University next season.
Smart who is only 33 years of age has gone 55-21 in two seasons at VCU. However he is probably the hottest commodity in college basketball after taking the 11th seeded VCU Rams deep into the NCAA Tournament beating teams like Kansas and Georgetown.
N.C. State and Missouri were reportedly in the running to hire Smart however Missouri withdrew their name after hiring Miami coach Frank Haith. Smart did meet with N.C. State officials Monday morning but no formal contract offer was extended.
VCU athletic director Norwood Teague made it clear after the season that the University would do everything they could to retain Smart going into next season. There has been no word as of yet if there will be a new contract drawn up for Smart to remain with the Rams.
