Lionel Messi is close to signing with MLS side Inter Miami according to a report from the Sunday Times.

Inter Miami are close to agreeing a deal with Lionel Messi, with the US club confident that the Argentina superstar will sign after the World Cup here in Qatar.

The Miami franchise, which is co-owned by David Beckham, expect Messi to move from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the European season, in a deal that will make the 35-year-old the highest-paid player in the history of MLS.

If this is all true, it’s unclear when Messi would actually join the Miami club headed by English great David Beckham. Currently, Messi’s contract with PSG in Ligue 1, France’s top division ends after the 2022-23 season. However, the European and U.S. schedules do overlap meaning PSG won’t finish their current season until Inter Miami is well within theirs. In fact, if Messi were, to begin with Inter Miami immediately after PSG he could embark on 14 straight months of soccer without a break.

In any case, Messi making his way stateside would be a huge get for MLS and their image on the world stage. As far as Miami goes, the Argentine great would certainly help in improving their 14-6-14 from this past season.
