Reds slugger Joey Votto may become the latest reason why Major League Baseball needs to put a cap on the 2020 season and just look ahead to preparing for 2021.

According to reports, the Cincinnati first baseman self reported COVID-19 symptoms and has been placed on the IL.

ESPN:

The Cincinnati Reds placed veteran first baseman Joey Votto on the injured list Sunday before the opener of their doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Votto self-reported coronavirus symptoms Sunday morning but has not tested positive for it.

The Reds did not disclose a reason for the move but specifically announced that Votto is on the IL — not the 10-day IL. There is no minimum or maximum number of days that Votto must remain on the IL.

As stated, Votto hasn’t tested positive yet for the virus and perhaps the team may dodge another bullet like the did with Mike Moustakas who also experienced symptoms but ended up testing negative. But if the way the MLB has approached and “contained” the coronavirus up this point, it always seems like we’re on the verge of a widespread outbreak within the League and a potential cancellation fo the season.

Call me pessimistic but the season shouldn’t have began in the first place.
