Red Wings sign defenseman Niklas Kronwall to a seven-year extension

Monday morning the Red Wings announced that they had agreed to terms with Niklas Kronwall on a seven-year contract extension worth an average of $4.75 million per season.

Kronwall, who is 30 years of age was in the final year of a five-year contract that is paying him $3.75 million this season with a cap hit of $3 million per season.

The news of Kronwall’s contract extension is definitely good news for the Wings given they’ve locked down one of their top defensemen for many years to come at a very affordable price. With the thought of this being Lidstrom’s last season with the Wings also makes this extension that much more important.

UPDATE: The deal includes a no-trade clause in the first five years of extension and a limited no-trade clause in the final two years. The limited no-trade is based on 10 teams that Kronwall would accept a trade to. The deal is worth $33.25 million through out the course of the contract.
