17-year-old snowboarder Red Gerard delivered the first medal for the United States winning the gold in stunning fashion in the Men’s Slopestyle from Pyeongchang.
“It’s just who can land it that day and all that,” the 17-year-old Gerard said before the event. “I’m hitting the [quarterpipe] side hit [on jumps], and they’re going straight over [the traditional jump].”
Gerard made the most of his opportunities hitting a double cork off the quarterpipe during qualifying Saturday which scored higher than any other competitor.
Meanwhile Canadians Max Parrott and Mark McMorris who were heavy favorites coming into the event finished with the silver and bronze medals respectively.
