For real this time, Texas fires Charlie Strong and will hire Tom Herman

Texas made it official Saturday when they fired head coach Charlie Strong on the heels of a 31-9 blowout loss to TCU.

Today’s announcement was a formality as it was widely expected that the Longhorns would fire Strong after his third season in which the storied program went 5-7 this season and suffered a losing 16-21 record during the Strong era.

Texas now turns their attention to Houston head coach Tom Herman who the Longhorns will reportedly hire today.

Herman, whose emerged as the top coaching candidate this upcoming football offseason is 5-0 against Power five teams and was instrumental in Ohio State‘s 2014 National Title run. Although despite the hype that comes with Herman, there are some blemishes that come in loses to Navy, SMU and Memphis this year.

Herman’s emergence in Texas also comes amid dominos falling at other programs.

James Smith of NOLA.com reported Friday that LSU was making a push for Herman after Florida State‘s Jimbo Fisher turned down a $6.8 million dollar per year offer sheet. Ross Dellenger of The Advocate however confirmed that Herman informed the Tigers that he was “leaning” towards Texas while Pat Forde cited sources that the Longhorns were Herman’s “No. 1 choice”. This latest news seemed to of rang true for LSU who named interim head coach Ed Orgeron as the permanent replacement for Les Miles.
