Rays’ reliever Joel Peralta ejected for having a foreign substance on his glove

Rays’ reliever Joel Peralta was set to enter Tuesday night’s game against the Nationals trying to maintain a slim 5-4 lead. Peralta though didn’t last long, in fact he didn’t make the first pitch as umpires ejected him after inspecting his glove and finding a foreign substance on it.

That foreign substance was later revealed to be pine tar according the MLB Networks JB Long. Long also later tweeted the following…

#Rays‬ Maddon calling out Nats Davey Johnson for checking Peralta’s glove. First said cowardly, then upped to “[p-word] move,” bush league.

This makes for a pretty interesting rest of the series.

No word yet on what initially led the Nationals to tip off the umpires. However while leaving the field Peralta is clearly seen tipping his cap to the Washington dugout.
