Steelers’ running back Rashard Mendenhall seems to be no stranger to making outlandish comments via his twitter account. This was the same person who had Adrian Peterson’s back when Peterson made those inept comments comparing the NFL to slavery.
“@AdrianPeterson is correct in his anology of this game. It is a lot deeper than most people understand. Anyone with knowledge of the slave trade and the NFL could say that these two parallel eachother.”
Hmm… I was unaware Mendenhall was such an expert on the African slave trade in the United States. So much so he could draw parallels between the GAME of football and one of the darkest times in United States history.
Mendenhall may have outdone himself though.
After the events this past Sunday that led to the killing of the notorious terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, a mass murder of innocent men, women and children, Mendenhall once again took to his Twitter account, first giving his opinion on the World Trade Center bombings on 9/11.
“We’ll never know what really happened,” Mendenhall said. “I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style.”
Mendenhall then goes on to give what can be interpreted as sympathy for Osama bin Laden…
Mendenhall also expresses sympathy for bin Laden. “What kind of person celebrates death?” Mendenhall says. “It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side.”
I want to know what that other side of the argument is. Isn’t this the same Bin Laden that admitted to being one of the masterminds behind the plot that killed thousands of innocent Americans on September 11th? Isn’t this the same guy that has admitted to dozens of other terror attacks that killed innocent people around the world?
My question to Mendenhall is how can anyone, especially in the United States, given any presumption to the innocence of Osama bin Laden when he has time and time again admitted his guilty role?
There was a quote that made it’s rounds Monday when the world woke up to the news of Bin Laden’s death that comes from Mark Twain that goes like this, “I’ve never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure.” No words can better sum up the way I feel about the Bin Laden situation.
UPDATE: Steelers’ president Art Rooney II gave his reaction to Mendenhall’s comment’s…
“I have not spoken with Rashard so it is hard to explain or even comprehend what he meant with his recent Twitter comments,” Rooney said in a statement posted at the team’s web site. “The entire Steelers’ organization is very proud of the job our military personnel have done and we can only hope this leads to our troops coming home soon.”
