WR Randy Moss has decided to retire rather than continue playing in the NFL says multiple media sources.
“After weighing his options and contemplating offers, he’s decided to retire,” Moss’ agent, Joel Segal told ESPN on Monday.
Moss, 34 was a free agent this offseason looking for work going into his 14th season in the league. It was believed that the New York Jets had interest in the pro-bowl wide out however that was nixed when they decided to go with Plaxico Burress. The Jets would have been his 5th NFL team.
At 6-4 and 215 lbs Randy Moss was arguably the most dominant wide receiver in his prime. Mismatches were often the case when Moss lined up against other corners in the league.
Moss finishes his career with 953 receptions which has him eighth all-time, tied with current Steeler Hines Ward. Moss’ 14,858 receiving yards put him fifth in NFL history. His 153 receiving touchdowns, has him tied with Terrell Owens, trailing only Jerry Rice. He is also second to Rice with 64 games with 100 or more receiving yards.
“He changed the game when he came into the league in 1998,” former Vikings coach Dennis Green told Sporting News on Monday afternoon. “It was like back with (Hall of Famer Chargers wide receiver) Lance Alworth, when the game was wide open. It always bombs away.” Green also commented on Moss’ physical attributes.
“He was just an incredible athlete. No. 1, he had that tremendous hand-eye coordination. Then he had the height and speed as assets. … We had Cris Carter for underneath. We drafted Randy for the deep ball. He was absolutely phenomenal with the deep ball.”
Moss was drafted 21st overall by the Minnesota Vikings in the 1998 NFL Draft. He will more than likely join fellow 98′ draft class members in Peyton Manning, Charles Woodson and Alan Faneca in the NFL Hall of Fame.
