Scott Skiles decided he’d had enough of the Orlando Magic today and announced his resignation after just one season with the organization.
“After much thought and careful consideration, I and I alone, have come to the conclusion that I am not the right head coach for this team,” Skiles said in a statement. “Therefore, effective immediately, I resign my position as head coach of the Orlando Magic. I realize this type of decision can cause much speculation. The reality though is in the first sentence. It is simple and true. Any other rumors are pure conjecture.
“I sincerely apologize for any unintended consequences that may adversely affect anyone associated with this decision, The Magic are a world-class organization that employs world-class people. I wish them nothing but great success. I will always be thankful, especially to the DeVos family, for the opportunity.”
Skiles, who was a former point guard with the team during the 90’s had his issues with the front office during his tenure. For instance Skiles didn’t believe Elfrid Payton was the point guard of the future while the rest of the higher-ups did. The head coach was also rubbed the wrong way (and rightfully so) when a delegation of front office members and coaches that didn’t include Skiles interviewed eight potential draft picks.
Skiles’ departure potentially highlights a bigger problem with the team who not only has trouble putting talent on the floor but also keeping a head coach around for longer than just a couple of seasons. Since 2012 when the team dumped Stan Van Gundy because league derelict Dwight Howard didn’t like him the team has employed three different head coaches including Skiles.
So who’s up next for Orlando? The rumor mill suggests Clippers assistant Mike Woodson and former Golden State head coach Mark Jackson.
Good luck.
