Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett was reportedly arrested early Saturday morning for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated according to Eleven Warriors.
Barrett’s arrest came after the quarterback allegedly tried to duck sobriety checkpoints around campus and blowing just over the .08 legal limit. He was eventually released to teammate Cardale Jones who game him a ride home.
Ohio State is on a bye before getting back to action on November 7th against Minnesota. Barrett’s status for that game is obviously up in the air for a couple of reasons related to his OVI arrest. First since Barrett is under the age of 21 he is subject to the Ohio State Department of Athletics’ student-athlete drug and alcohol program. This could warrant a two-game suspension for the quarterback. Under the same policy, Barrett could also face a two-game suspension if this was his second drug or alcohol related offense.
So far this season, Barrett has thrown for 472 yards and seven touchdowns while also running for 329 yards and seven additional scores. He’s also recently reclaimed the starting role for the Buckeyes since an ankle injury ended his 2014 season on November 29th against Michigan.
UPDATE: Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has suspended J.T. Barrett for one-game which will come November 7th against Minnesota. According to Ohio State AD Gene Smith, the OVI arrest for Barrett doesn’t fall under the University’s drug and alcohol policy since it was only a misdemeanor.
OSU AD Gene Smith said incident doesn't fall under drug and alcohol policy because it's a misdemeanor & Urban Meyer decides punishment
