According to multiple sources on Twitter, the Oakland Roots will reportedly make the jump to the USL Championship which is considered the “second-tier” of the closed United States soccer system.
Obviously this story is still developing and there’s been zero about this from the Club who are set to begin the NISA Fall schedule tonight against the LA Force.
Also, if the Roots are indeed making the jump to USLC it’ll have its pros and cons. The pros being the USL being a more established and stable league, so the worry about having to find a new home if NISA folds (hypothetically speaking) will be a nonissue.
The cons being at what price will this anticipated move bring to the Club itself and it’s independent roots (no pun)? Typically speaking, the USL assumes much more control over club identity than that of NISA so fans may have to come to the realization that the benefits that come with having a truly independent club are simply no more.
