Brett McMurphy is reporting Notre Dame will leave the Big East to join the ACC as a full member, with the exception of football and hockey. Despite the move the Big East contends that Notre Dame must pay $5 million and give the conference 27 months notice before making the departure. It’s expected that Notre Dame and the Big East will negotiate terms to expedite the process.
Even though Notre Dame will not be a full time member, the football team is expected to play five annual games against ACC opponents. Last season Notre Dame played BC, Maryland, Wake Forest and Pitt while this season they’re set to play BC, Wake Forest, Pitt and Miami.
With the Big East seemingly on life support, Notre Dame’s move to the ACC gives them a much more interesting basketball schedule matching up against Duke, North Carolina and eventually former Big East counterparts Syracuse and Pitt.
