The exodus from the CCHA continues.
Thursday, Northern Michigan University announced that it would like to leave the CCHA and join the WCHA beginning in 2013-14. This is according to George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press.
CCHA has already loss a handful of teams including Miami of Ohio who will join the newly formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference while the Big Ten will sponsor a conference consisting of Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Minnesota, Wisconsin and upstart Penn State.
The WCHA will meet on Friday in Minneapolis where they could vote in Northern Michigan.
Michigan Tech coach Mel Pearson, who will be in Houghton dealing with personal matters said he would support Northern Michigan into the conference since there’s already an established rivalry between the two schools.
“We’ve had a long and storied rivalry with them,” Pearson said. “Walt Kyle and I both played against each other in the 1981 NCAA tournament in Duluth, Minn., so we go way back, not only as coaches.”
Currently Western Michigan is looking into joining the newly formed NCHC.
