Some of the fun included a playful.
According to the Sporting News, the story went public when the fan making the bet with Turco called into a Montreal radio station Team 990 to tell his story.
“I bet him after the Canadiens scored that Chicago wouldn’t score again,” the caller told Team 990. “He took the bet. When they scored I gave him five bucks. I slipped it though the glass. He took it with no questions asked.”
Now the report goes on to state that Turco raised the stakes when the game went into overtime. Once Montreal won the game Turco paid up.
“When the Canadiens scored in overtime, he handed me back a wad of $5 bills,” said the fan, who added that the bet was 5-to-1 on the original $5 bet. “I could not make this up.”
The Sporting News says the NHL is following up on the matter.
“We are following up to understand the circumstances, but no, I would not term it a formal investigation,” deputy commissioner Bill Daly wrote in an e-mail to Sporting News.
Betting in all four of the major sports leagues in the United States obviously takes sports betting very seriously.
However, it seems like this had more to do with Marty Turco having fun with some fans then a serious wager and exchange of funds. It was only $5. Plus Turco lost the bet.
