Arguably the greatest American born NHL player has decided to call it a career.
Mike Modano announced via his Facebook page that he intends to retire have 21 seasons in the NHL and will make it official on Friday during a press conference.
βAfter a long summer of thinking about my future, Iβve come to the decision that itβs time to retire as a player from the NHL,β wrote Modano on Facebook. βThereβs way too many people to thank here at this time and too much to say, so I have a press conference scheduled for early Friday afternoon. Check back Friday late afternoon for more. What a great ride itβs been!β
A sure bet hall of famer, Modano finishes his career with 561 goals and 1374 points while playing almost his entire career with the Minnesota/Dallas Stars. The Michigan native got the opportunity to play with the Detroit Red Wings in his final season but was limited to only 40 games due to a freakish lacerated wrist injury. He was only able to tally 4 goals and 11 assists.
Furthermore Modano finishes things up 23rd on the NHLβs all-time goal scoring list, 22nd in points and 14th with 1499 games played. He leads all American-born players in points and goals.
The one-time Stanley Cup winner with Dallas in 1999 also won an Olympic Silver Medal with Team USA in 2002.
