When veteran forward Mike Modano first signed with the Wings he mentioned there was one date on the schedule that he was kind of dreading but was glad it happened in beginning of the season. That date is tonight when the Red Wings head down to the American Airlines Center to take on the Dallas Stars, Modano’s former team to which he played almost his entire professional career at.
So what kind of reception will Modano receive in his return to the Lone Star State? According to George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press Modano believes there is going to be a mixed reaction…
“I think it’s going to be fun,” Modano said. “It’s going to be, obviously, a mix of emotions. Nonetheless, looking forward to seeing a lot of familiar people.”
Does he anticipate a positive reception?
“Well, you never know,” Modano said. “They always boo the Red Wings, so I’m guilty by association now. Obviously it’s a little salt in the wound that I’m in Detroit. … I think for the most part it will be pretty positive.”
Of course there is going to be fans who are the die hards where if you’re not wearing our uniform then you are the enemy, which I can understand. However even when the Dallas Stars were the Minnesota North Stars, Mike Modano WAS that team. Even when it consisted of players like Brett Hull, Derian Hatcher, Ed Belfour and Marty Turco when you thought of the the Minnesota North Stars or Dallas Stars the first player that would come to mind is Mike Modano. It’s going to be unfortunate if he does get receive a cold welcome from some fans in attendance tonight.
