Michigan State gets #10 as they defeat Northwestern 31-17

It was a historical day in Evanston, Illinois for the Michigan State football team.

First and foremost they were able to defeat Northwestern 31-17 in a game that did have the dramatics of last season’s matchup. Today’s win for Michigan State also though secured the team’s outright Legends Division win as they now prepare themselves for either Penn State or Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game next week. Furthermore, Spartan QB Kirk Cousins becomes Michigan State’s all-time leader in touchdown passes with 62 passing former Spartan QB Jeff Smoker.

A good day all-around for the Spartans indeed.

Cousins’ record breaking 29-yard touchdown fittingly went to B.J. Cunningham completing a 93-yard drive. Cousins finished his day going 14 of 20 for 214 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT.

Michigan State was able to clinch the win today after defensive tackle Jerel Worthy sacked Northwestern QB Dan Persa forcing the Wildcats to punt. The Spartans were able to score on the ensuing drive. Return man Keshawn Martin also remained very dangerous on special teams returning a punt 57 yards for a touchdown.

Northwestern (6-6, 3-5) now hopes to get a bowl bid after having their 4 game winning streak snapped.

Persa finished his day going 23 of 32 for 245 yards and two TDs.
