Michigan head coach John Beilein underwent successful double-bypass surgery Monday in Ann Arbor according to Nick Baumgardner of the Detroit Free Press. The surgery was performed by Dr. Francis Pagani that included a “two-vessel coronary bypass graft surgery” where a healthy artery or vessel was taken from another part of the body and transferred to the heart to improve blood flow.
Detroit Free Press:
“I feel grateful and blessed that this surgery was performed at the University of Michigan,” Beilein, 65, said in a statement. “Kathleen, and our family appreciate all of the world-class care that was provided for us. Dr. Kim Eagle, Dr. Francis Pagani, Dr. Stanley Chetcuti and all of their staffs at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center are so talented and performed like champions over this past week.
“I am going to work very hard in my rehabilitation to be stronger than ever by the time practice begins for this upcoming season.”
Beilein is expected to make a full recovery and be out of the hospital in a few days. However it’s also going to be another few weeks before the Michigan head coach is back to normal which means he’ll miss the team’s planned trip to Spain for some exhibition games from August 17th to the 26. In the meantime assistant coach Saddi Washington will serve as the team’s interim until Beilein gets back. Assistants Luke Yaklich and DeAndre Haynes will resume their regular roles on the bench.
