According to Pete Bigelow of AnnArbor.com, the Michigan Wolverines have broken into the AP Top 25 polls coming in at number 20. This comes after Michigan’s 28-24 victory over un-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon.
Michigan is the fourth highest ranked Big Ten team at 20 with Ohio State coming in at number 2, Iowa at 9 and Wisconsin at 11. Penn State is also ranked however dropped in the polls to 22 after their loss to number 1 ranked Alabama.
The Wolverines finished the weekly ballot with 437 points, which placed them in between Jim Harbaugh’s Stanford team at No. 19 (446) and No. 21 West Virginia (197).
So far this season looks like a carbon copy of last years season. They opened up the year by beating a mediocre to not so good team in UConn much like they did against Western Michigan last season. Then they beat a Notre Dame team that isn’t as good YET as many anticipated. Let’s not kid ourselves, Notre Dame came out looking flat against Purdue last week and didn’t fare much better this week against Michigan. Now given the opponents and what happened to Michigan last season after facing relatively the same opponents why does Michigan get into the top 25 at number 20 for that matter?! The thing I really don’t get too is why does Penn State get ranked lower then Michigan after losing to a team that by all means will probably win the National Championship again this year in Alabama?
Now it’s great that Michigan is off to a 2-0 start but again like Downtown said that other night Michigan fans simply cannot get too excited about this. Two wins against two mediocre opponents is something to build on but not to write home about and it definitely doesn’t merit a number 20 ranking.
