Even though the season hasn’t started yet, Michigan basketball can head into the 2011-12 year with their heads held high.
Thursday, USA Today/ESPN released their 2011-12 preseason men’s basketball rankings with Michigan coming in at #18. That #18 ranking also means Michigan is the only ranked team in the State of Michigan.
Their biggest in-state rivals Michigan State failed to make the initial rankings after finishing last season with a disappointing 19-15 record and a first round exit in the NCAA Tournament. Michigan State did however appear third in the “others receiving votes” category essentially meaning they carry a #28 ranking.
Oakland University, the third team to make the NCAA Tournament last season also failed to make the rankings as they look for another Summit League title this upcoming season.
MAC counterparts Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Western Michigan as well as Horizon League member Detroit Mercy also did not make the rankings.
