Meet Tigers call-up Chance Ruffin

After the Tigers defeated the Minnesota Twins 5-2 Sunday, the Tigers called up RHP Chance Ruffin from Triple-A Toledo. To make room on the roster for him the Tigers optioned Lester Oliveros back down to Triple-A.

Ruffin was the 48th overall selection in the 2010 MLB draft. He will be the second player from last year’s class to make his major league debut after Chris Sale of the White Sox.

Ruffin who was drafted out of the University of Texas was just promoted to Triple-A last month. While with the Mud Hens, Ruffin had a 2.00 ERA and seven saves in eight appearances. For the season he was 3-3 with 17 saves, a 2.09 ERA and a 55/20 K/BB ratio in 43 innings.

Chance Ruffin’s path to the majors is very similar to his father Bruce Ruffin who was also taken in the second round out of Texas in 1985. Like Chance, Bruce Ruffin made it the majors after just a year in the minor leagues. In 12 seasons Bruce Ruffin accumulated a 4.19 ERA and 63 saves.
