McVay says Stafford is in “good shape” despite revisiting a back specialist

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, sidelined by a persistent back injury, consulted a specialist again on Saturday, missing training camp activities.

Speaking to reporters, including Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, Rams coach Sean McVay said, “I’m not setting a timeline. He’s progressing well, saw Dr. Steven Watkins again, and everything looks positive.”

Stafford, no stranger to injuries throughout his career, is week-to-week with his back condition. McVay remains confident the quarterback will be ready for the regular season.

Still, Stafford will sit out a third straight week of practice, including a joint session with the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday. His status for the next week’s practice with the Los Angeles Chargers is unclear.

With Stafford out, Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett have been splitting quarterback duties at camp.

Stafford’s history with back issues includes playing through small fractures in his back during the 2018 season with the Detroit Lions, which impacted his performance. More recently, he missed seven games in 2022 due to a spinal cord injury. Despite these challenges, Stafford has remained durable in recent years, playing a full season in 2024 and missing only one game in 2023.

The 37-year-old Stafford, who inked a reworked $84 million, two-year deal with the Rams in March, is gearing up for the season opener against the Houston Texans on September 7.
