Authorities were alerted of a possible boating accident Sunday and later found a 30 foot vessel overturned off Miami Beach. Emergency workers initially found three victims including Fernandez, two on top of the water and one underneath the boat, all of whom were deceased according to the Miami Herald. The Coast Guard along with Miami-Dade County authorities are still looking for other victims/survivors.
The Marlins, who canceled today’s game against the Braves – a game Fernandez was scheduled to start – released the following statement:
“The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayer sare with his family at this very difficult time.”
The former 2013 rookie of the year, Fernandez along with his mother defected from Cuba in 2007 after previous failed attempts. He was eventually drafted by the Marlins in 2011 before become one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.
We’ll have more as this tragic story continues to develop.
