As we mentioned on the website a few days ago, Magglio Ordonez is officially done for the season according to Steve Kornacki of Mlive.com.
Ordonez learned yesterday (Tuesday) that he will need surgery to stabilize a broken right ankle which he suffered on July 24th after sliding into home. The procedure will be performed today (Wednesday) and he should be ready in time for the 2011 season.
“Some people thought it was necessary and others didn’t,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. “But it’s better to be safe than sorry. I don’t think it’s a complicated surgery.”
Ordonez, 36, batted .303 with 12 home runs and 59 RBIs in 84 games. He will not reach the starts or plate appearance requirements to vest his $15 million contract for 2011 and is expected to become a free agent unless Detroit picks up his option.
“Magglio’s been here a long, long time,” said Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski, who signed Ordonez as a free agent for the 2005 season. “But we will not have talks with any of our players until after the season.”
