Not nearly as much as a slam dunk as Jon Gruden’s return to the Raiders, up until last night was the worst kept secret in the NFL for at least the past few weeks, Matt Patricia eventually being hired by the Lions would certainly fall in line with not being totally surprising.
Although not official, according to an NBC Sports report from Mike Florio, ‘a source with knowledge of the situation’ the Patriots are ‘bracing’ for their own defensive coordinator to depart for the Motor City.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Patriots are bracing for defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to leave, most likely to become the next coach of the Detroit Lions.
Patricia, who has a degree in aeronautical engineering from Rennselaer Polytechnic, joined the Patriots in 2004. He became the defensive coordinator in 2012.
Regarded as brilliant in all matters, Patricia also is believed to be more than ready to take over a team of his own. He has, we’re told, a very good relationship with Lions G.M. Bob Quinn, who previously worked for the Patriots.
Fans will have to marinate on this for potentially a few weeks since nothing can be official until the Patriots are ousted from the Playoffs. It’s also noteworthy to make clear that Florio’s report seems to be suggesting the speculation regarding Patricia’s future is coming from the New England side of things and not necessarily the Detroit side.
Florio however also points Patricia’s candidacy for the job could be come even more clear as the weeks go on. To the regard, possibly of an unofficial hiring of Patricia by Quinn and the Lions.
