Detroit

The Detroit Lions have officially moved on from veteran running back David Montgomery.

Multiple reports confirm the Lions traded Montgomery to the Houston Texans in exchange for offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, a fourth round draft pick, and a seventh round draft pick.

The move comes after weeks of offseason noise surrounding Montgomery’s future in Detroit. During NFL Combine coverage, reports surfaced suggesting Montgomery wanted out. He publicly denied those claims at the time. Even so, the Lions ultimately decided to move him.

Montgomery spent three seasons in Detroit and played a key role in the team’s offensive identity. He brought a physical presence between the tackles and became a reliable red zone option. However, his role shifted over time as Jahmyr Gibbs emerged as a centerpiece of the backfield.

Detroit now gains additional draft capital and a young offensive lineman in Scruggs. The move signals confidence in Gibbs and the current direction of the offense while also addressing depth in the trenches.

For Houston, the Texans add a proven veteran back with playoff experience and a history of production. Montgomery gives them a dependable option in short yardage and goal line situations.

This trade reshapes Detroit’s backfield heading into the 2026 season. It also continues a pattern under general manager Brad Holmes of balancing immediate competitiveness with roster flexibility and long term planning.

The Lions offense will look different next season. The question now becomes how Detroit replaces Montgomery’s physical style and whether the return package strengthens the roster in a meaningful way.

One thing is clear. The backfield conversation in Detroit just changed for good.
