Lions now know who will be kicking the field goals for them in 2013.
According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions have signed 38-year-old veteran David Akers one day after Jason Hanson announced that he’d end his 21-year NFL career.
Coming off his worst season as a pro missing 13 of 48 field goal attempts while dealing with a hip injury, Akers is a six-time Pro Bowler who has experience kicking in big games as well as the playoffs. Not to mention in 2011 Akers made 44 of 52 field goal attempts setting an NFL single season points record at 166.
In 9 of his 13 NFL seasons Akers has been pretty solid hitting on 82 percent of his field goal chances. 40 of his 87 kickoffs also went for a touchback in 2012.
