Lions lock up Megatron long-term

Megatron is locked into Detroit for the long-haul.

Wednesday, the Lions and two-time Pro Bowl wide-out Calvin Johnson agreed to terms on a contract extension that will keep him in Detroit through the 2019 season.

According to ESPN, Johnson’s deal is worth $132 million and includes $60 million in guarantees making him the highest paid non quarterback in the league. The deal also surpasses the $120 million that the Arizona Cardinals gave to Larry Fitzgerald.

“Great day for the NFL, Lions, and city of Detroit as Calvin Johnson signs an 8-year deal to potentially keep him a Lion for life,” coach Jim Schwartz tweeted this afternoon.

Better yet for the Lions though is Johnson’s new contract will free up $9 million dollars this season in which the Lions can use to sign other vital free agents such as linebacker Stephen Tulloch.

Johnson is coming off a career season in which he caught 96 passes for 1,681 yards and 16 touchdowns.
