Lions Free Agency Defensive Backs Targets…If There is Free Agency

Detroit is in dire need for a solid secondary. The Lions have settled for sub par secondary for years now and the only glimmer of hope is safety Louis Delmas but the Lions simply need more. It is still not known if Chris Houston is going to re-sign and if he doesn’t it’s going to push the fact that Detroit will need to go out and get themselves a notable free agent for their secondary.

Nnamdi Asomugha (OAK)- HE IS NOT COMING TO DETROIT even with the recent report coming from NFLDraftCity, enough said. Asomugha is the best corner in the NFL and there will be a 31 team race to get him because Oakland (or more like Al Davis) for some odd reason doesn’t want him there. Asomugha will simply demand too much money from Detroit which puts the Lions in a bad position considering the other holes on their roster they need to fill. If the Lions only needed help in their secondary Asomugha might be a different story however this isn’t the case.

Champ Bailey (DEN) Champ Bailey would be a good improvement to a weak Detroit secondary, although it is looking more like Denver resign’s him since they passed up Patrick Peterson for Von Miller.

Brent Grimes (ATL) Brent Grimes had a good season last year starting all 16 games with 87 tackles and 5 interceptions. I see Atlanta resigning Grimes as they make a push for the NFC championship.

Carlos Rogers (WAS) Carlos Rogers at age 29 is at the peak of his career. Rogers played in 12 games last season racking up 54 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 2 Interceptions. This is a toss-up if Washington will re-sign him or not, but if Rodgers hits the free agency I would like to see the Lions make a bid for him.

Johnathan Joseph (CIN) Johnathan Joseph is at a prime NFL age of 27 and it is more than likely that he will hit the market. Joseph is a great athlete, who played in 12 games recording 42 tackles and 3 interceptions. I would like to see him in Detroit even with his somewhat disappointing season last year

Ronde Barber (TB) Ronde Barber is OLD, 36 years old. I don’t see anyone signing him

Antonio Cromartie (NYJ) Antonio Cromartie is also in the prime of his career at the age of 27. You might want to tack on a few more years however given the amount of offspring he has. Other than that  Cromartie is one of the better Corners in the NFL with 207 tackles and 18 interceptions. I would love if the Lions were able to land Cromartie.

Ike Taylor (PIT) Ike Taylor is 31 years old and nearing the end of his career. Despite him being 31 I would still like to see him in Detroit. Taylor is not as old as Ronde Barber and still has some solid years left. If the Lions can sign Ike Taylor for a good contract they can focus on other positions they need that they would not be able to pursue if they give Asomugha a blank check.
