Lions first-round selection this past NFL draft (seventh overall), Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be absent from the team’s three-day rookie minicamp this Friday according to Mlive.com.

Detroit Lions rookie offensive tackle Penei Sewell announced on Wednesday he has tested positive for COVID-19. He received the news last weekend, and is not expected to participate in the three-day rookie minicamp that Detroit will host beginning on Friday.

Sewell is the centerpiece of Detroit’s latest draft class, a seventh overall pick who was considered the best offensive lineman in the country. The Lions were so excited to land him that they nearly traded up two spots for the 331-pounder, then rejected trade offers to move down when they were on the clock to ensure they got their guy.

Because of his diagnosis, Sewell may not be able to participate in any organized team activities until June 8 when mandatory minicamp begins after players said they would boycott all voluntary workouts at Allen Park in the meantime.
