Lion beat writer Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com recently answered various emails regarding the status of the Detroit Lions as they inch closer to the regular season.
One question was quite interesting and that was in regards to the health of rookie DT Nick Fairley who has missed most of training camp due to a foot injury.
Here is what Kowalski has to say…
Bill: Please give us an update on Nick Fairley.
Tom Kowalski: The last time I saw Fairley (and tackle Jason Fox), they were both still in a boot and that’s not a good sign with two weeks to go before the regular season opener. However, you have to be careful with those things because Demario Ballard was in a boot one day and practicing a few days after that.
I think the injuries to Fairley and Fox are more significant than that, but you’ve still got to be careful with your guesswork. I wouldn’t be surprised, though, if both guys missed the first game or two of the season. At least, it might take that long for them to get back into football shape.
The Lions’ depth at defensive tackle is pretty deep so it would be in good judgement not to rush Fairley back. Jason Fox is a different story considering the amount of question marks surrounding the offensive line.
