Lexington Sporting Club is making the jump to the USL Championship in 2025.
The Club confirmed the news on Tuesday bringing the total number of teams in the USL Championship, the second division within the US Soccer pyramid, up to 26 with the addition of Brooklyn who’ll also begin play next season.
“Elevating to the USL Championship is the culmination of our efforts to build a premier soccer club in Lexington,” said Lexington SC Owner Bill Shively. “This move is a natural next step in our journey, reflecting our commitment to developing talent and growing the sport at the highest level.”
Currently, at 2-4-6, Lexington sits dead last in the USL League One, the third division of U.S. Soccer, so the promotion isn’t based on merit. However, the Club is set to move into a new 7,500-seat soccer-specific stadium in Lexington which they’ll share with their first-division women’s side in the USL Super League. Currently, the men’s side plays in the 5,000-seat Toyota Stadium which is owned and operated by Georgetown College.
Lexington was first awarded a USL League One franchise back in October of 2021. The Club officially began play in 2023 finishing out the season 7-11-14 good for ninth place in League One out outside the six-team playoff.
