The Houston Rockets secured their long-term superstar anchor on Sunday, agreeing to a two-year, $90 million contract extension with forward Kevin Durant. The deal, which includes a player option for the 2027-28 season, was reported by Shams Charania of ESPN, citing Durant’s business partner and Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman.

The extension finalizes Durant’s commitment to the franchise just two days before the team tips off their 2025-26 season. Durant was acquired by the Rockets in a blockbuster seven-team trade this past offseason, where he arrived from the Phoenix Suns.

A Discount for Flexibility

Notably, the $90 million contract is a significant financial sacrifice by the 15-time All-Star. Durant was eligible for a maximum two-year extension worth approximately $120 million. By agreeing to a nearly $30 million discount, Durant is providing the Rockets with crucial salary-cap flexibility, a move that aligns with the team’s goal to continue building a championship contender around their core of young talent, which includes Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson.
