The perjury trial of pitching great Roger Clemens has begun.
According to the Associated Press, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton began with selecting a jury from a pool of 125 Washington residents. Judge Walton said he hopes to find 12 jurors and four alternates by early next week for the high profile trial that is expected to last into August.
The report further states that like other players who have been indicted in baseball’s steroid era, Clemens will not be charged with drug crimes. Instead he is accused of lying about his drug use to a House Committee while under oath.
In 2008 he told that same House Committee that he never used performance enhancing drugs during what could be a hall of fame career in which he won a record seven Cy Young Awards.
Clemens won 354 games during a career that spanned nearly a quarter-century.
